Sunset Primary Weekly Parent Newsletter

Dear Sunset Families,

As we wrap up another wonderful week at Sunset Primary, I want to take a moment to share how grateful I am for our incredible school community! Each day, our Tigers continue to grow, learn, build friendships, and show us what it means to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind. There is so much to celebrate, and I am incredibly proud of the progress we are making together!

Next week is Conference Week, and we are excited to welcome our families into the building! This is one of my favorite opportunities for us to strengthen the partnership between home and school. Conferences are a time to celebrate your child's successes, reflect on their growth, and work together to set meaningful goals for the months ahead. Every child has unique strengths, talents, and opportunities for growth, and we look forward to sharing those with you!

I encourage you to come ready to celebrate, ask questions, and share your perspective. You know your child best, and your voice is an important part of their success! When families and schools work together, incredible things happen for kids.
📅 Important Conference Week Reminders:
  • Early Dismissal: Students will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m. each day, October 26–30.
  • No Late Start Wednesday: There will be NO one-hour late start on Wednesday, October 28. School will begin at our regular time of 8:15 a.m.
  • No Preschool: Preschool classes will not be held during Conference Week.

🗳️ Please Vote by November 3!
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026! Ballots are arriving in homes, and we encourage all eligible voters in our Sunset community to take time to review the issues and participate in this important civic process. Legislative positions, statewide initiatives, and other ballot measures can have an impact on public education and our communities. Staying informed and participating in elections are meaningful ways to engage in decisions that shape our future. Thank you for taking the time to make your voice heard!

Thank you for the trust, encouragement, and partnership you continue to share with us. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful Tiger community, and I am excited for all that is still ahead this school year!

Together, we are making a difference, one Tiger at a time! 🧡🖤

With Tiger Pride,
Mrs. Vaughan

Hello, Sunset Families!

Hello Sunset Families!

Lunch & Recess Updates
At Sunset, we want every Tiger to feel safe, supported, and ready to learn throughout the school day. We are making some adjustments to our lunch and recess routines to create more consistent expectations and positive experiences for all students.

We appreciate the families who have shared questions and concerns with us, particularly around student safety. We have taken these perspectives into consideration as we continue to strengthen our routines and support each and every Tiger.

Families can help by talking with your Tiger about using kind words, keeping hands and feet safe, following adult directions, including others, and using Tiger Talk to solve problems. When we reinforce these expectations at home and at school, we help create a positive experience for everyone.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to help every Tiger feel safe, build friendships, and grow!

In partnership,
Jess Sinclair

Dear Sunset Families,

October is Bullying Prevention Month and at Sunset this is the time of the year where we start our Bullying Prevention Unit through Second Step. Second Step is a research-based social-emotional and "human skills" program used across PreK–12 schools to improve school climate, self-regulation, empathy, and academic readiness.

Anti-bullying efforts focus on preventing, recognizing, and responding to repetitive negative behavior. This unit teaches children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps our school be a safe, respectful place where everyone can learn.

To further help our school be a safe and respectful place, we are also going to use the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit. In the lessons, your child will learn specific skills to help stop bullying. Students will learn how to:
• Recognize when bullying is happening
• Report bullying to a trusting adult
• Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others
• Be a bystander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying

Thank you for partnering with us to help every child feel safe, respected, and supported at school and at home.

Social Emotional Learning Update

🐯 SEL: Growing Stronger Together!

At Sunset Primary, our social skills lesson focuses on grit, making mistakes, and persevering through challenges. These skills help students build confidence, develop problem-solving abilities, and understand that challenges are opportunities to learn and grow. When students practice perseverance, they become more resilient and better prepared to approach both academic and social challenges with a positive mindset.

Zone Strategy:
This Week’s Zones Tool to Try: What is Count Down?
  • Like a rocket launch, count backwards from ten to one
  • Keep your voice silent while counting inside your brain

School Attendance

🧡 Small Choices, Big Impact: Let’s Get Back to 90%!

Sunset Tigers, we’re currently at 87% attendance, and we know we can reach our 90% goal together! Small, everyday decisions can make a big difference in helping our students show up ready to learn.

Here are a few ways families can help:
  • Make school a priority. Establish a consistent bedtime and morning routine to help your Tiger arrive on time and ready to learn.
  • Save appointments for after school when possible. Even missing part of the day means missing valuable learning time.
  • Come to school when your child is feeling well enough to learn. A sniffle without a fever or other significant symptoms doesn’t always need to mean a day at home. Please keep your child home when they are sick and follow school health guidelines.
  • Build attendance into your family routine. Whenever possible, plan vacations and other activities around school breaks.
  • Celebrate showing up! Encourage your child by recognizing their effort and the importance of being at school each day.
Every Tiger, every day! Moving from 87% to 90% starts with small choices made by all of us. Thank you for partnering with us to help every Tiger feel connected, supported, and excited to learn.

Together, we can reach our goal! 🧡🖤
