Dear Sunset Families,

What a wonderful Welcome Back Event! 

It was such a joy to see our Tigers and connect with families. The energy and excitement throughout the building reminded us just how special our school community is. Thank you for taking the time to meet our staff and help us begin the year feeling connected and ready!

As we prepare for the first day of school, student safety remains our highest priority. During morning arrival, please say your goodbyes at our Hug & Go Zone and allow your child to enter the building independently. Adults may not enter the school or walk students to their classrooms, except for kindergarten families during the first week. Only students and staff are permitted beyond the school doors during the school day, including arrival and dismissal. We understand that the first few days can feel new for students and families, so additional staff members will be available to warmly welcome students, help them find their classrooms, and support them as they learn our routines. Thank you for partnering with us and following these expectations so we can maintain a safe, calm, and efficient arrival process for every Sunset Tiger.

We know the first few days may bring a few unexpected challenges as everyone settles into new routines. Please know that our team will work diligently to make any necessary adjustments as quickly as possible. We greatly appreciate your patience, flexibility, and partnership.

Traffic is often especially busy at the beginning of the school year, and unexpected delays may occur. With more families driving students to school, we anticipate additional congestion in and around our parking lot. To help keep everyone safe, please drive slowly, follow all traffic expectations, and carefully follow the directions of school staff.

Your cooperation will help us get every student where they need to be as safely and efficiently as possible. When possible, we encourage students who are eligible for bus transportation to ride the bus, which will help reduce traffic around the school.

If you believe your child may need additional support during beginning of the year transition, please reach out to Mrs. Vaughan, our assistant principal, or our school counselor. We would be happy to partner with you to create a plan that helps your child feel safe, confident, and ready for a successful start to the year.

The building is closed before 7:45 a.m., and there is no staff supervision available. Please do not drop off or leave students on campus before this time.

Students eating breakfast at school may enter the building beginning at 7:45 a.m. Students who are not eating breakfast and arrive between 7:45 and 8:05 a.m. will report directly to the gym, where they will be supervised by staff.

At 8:05 a.m., students will be dismissed from the gym and may go to their classrooms.

Instruction begins promptly at 8:15 a.m. All students should be seated in their classrooms and ready to begin the day at that time. Please plan your morning routine and travel time accordingly so your child arrives with enough time to enter the building, get to class, and be ready to learn by 8:15 a.m.

Bus riders are dismissed at 2:35 p.m., followed by students using our car and walk-up pick-up areas. Please use only your child’s designated location and follow all staff directions.

Families using vehicle pick-up will receive a large dashboard card displaying the student’s name. Please place the card where it can be easily seen by staff.

Car pick-up will take place in the small parking lot. Students will remain with staff in their assigned grade-level areas until they are released to their designated adult.

Car pick-up will take place in the bus zone only after all buses have departed. Vehicles may not enter the bus zone while buses are present or loading. Staff will direct vehicles into the area when it is safe to begin car pick-up. Please pay close attention to the staff directions.

Families walking to campus must use one of our two designated walk-up zones. These zones keep pedestrians safely separated from buses and vehicle traffic.

Families using Zone A will wait in the designated area near the front crosswalk. (near the BIG tree). Staff will escort students to the zone and release them directly to their designated adult.

Families using Zone B will wait in the designated area at the end of the bus zone. Staff will escort students to the zone and release them directly to their designated adult.

Parents and guardians may not enter or walk through the bus zone during dismissal. Families using Zone B must access the waiting area without walking through the active bus loading area.

Dismissal may take a little longer during the first several days as everyone learns the procedures. Thank you for arriving at the appropriate time, using the correct pickup area, following staff directions, and partnering with us to keep every Sunset Tiger safe and accounted for!

Hello, Sunset Families!

Thank you for taking the time to join us at Thursday’s Welcome Back Event. It was great to meet so many of you. 

As we get ready to kick off the school year, I want to talk about something that makes a tremendous difference in your child's success: attendance. Students who attend school regularly perform better academically, build stronger friendships, and develop habits that serve them for life. Even in elementary school, missing just two days per month adds up to nearly four weeks of learning over the year. Every day at Sunset counts, and we miss your Tigers when they're not here!

I know life happens. Illnesses, appointments, and family needs are all part of the journey. When absences are unavoidable, please let us know so we can support your tiger. Our goal is to partner with you to ensure your student doesn't fall behind and feels confident when they return.

At Sunset, we are all expected to be safe, respectful, responsible and kind. Now is a great time to talk about what those promises look like at school.

This week students will attend school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. There will be no school on Friday. Kidnergarten students will only attend on their assigned day. Preschool students will start school on September 8.

As we transition back into “school mode,” we appreciate your partnership at home. Practicing schoolwide expectations, preparing materials the night before, and reestablishing consistent evening and bedtime routines will help our Tigers arrive rested, confident, and ready to learn.

Please remember that accessible parking spaces are reserved only for vehicles displaying a valid accessible parking permit or license plate. Many Sunset students and families rely on these spaces because of their individual accessibility needs. By keeping these spaces available, we help ensure they can safely and easily access our school. Thank you for partnering with us to support every member of our Sunset community.

Please make sure your child and their teacher know the regular dismissal plan. To request a same-day change, call the school office before 1:30 p.m. and be prepared to provide:

We must verify that the caller is authorized to change the student’s dismissal plan. Without this information, the change will not be made. Changes requested after 2:00 p.m. will be made only in an emergency.

As we prepare for the start of the school year, we ask all families to review the UPSD Primary Student Handbook. It includes important information about school expectations, safety, attendance, student behavior, and the procedures that help our schools remain safe, consistent, and focused on learning.
